Rights And Responsibilities Of Parents

  • All parents have the RIGHT:

    • to expect that their children will receive sound education

    • to actively participate, wherever possible, through constructive involvement in the governance and life of the school

    • to expect regular reports on their children’s progress or lack of progress

    • to attend the requested ‘report follow up’ evenings

    • to expect the educators to monitor and regularly mark the learners’ work

    • to request, should they so wish, an interview with any educator or member of the management staff, through the correct procedure which is to telephone the Secretary or apply in writing

    • to be informed about changes which may occur, from time to time, in the KZN educational system (which will be done either via a newsletter or at a special meeting)

    •  to be able to communicate suggestions or ideas (in writing) to the Governing Body

  • All parents have the RESPONSIBILITY:

    • to ensure that they provide ‘daily doses’ of quality, individual attention for their children

    • to build, wherever possible, a positive link between home and school

    • to seek clarification from the school principal as soon as possible should a parent disagree with a situation which may have arisen at school.   He/she should not undermine the authority of the school by angrily ‘downing’ the School/Educator in the Learner’s presence, but rather, calm down and ask the learner to repeat the incident  (jot down relevant points).  Thereafter, telephone the Secretary for an appointment or write a letter to the person concerned.

    •  to ensure that the learner obeys the school’s code of conduct, regulations and procedures (including amendments thereto)

    •  to ensure that the learner is punctual:

    • in his/her attendance of school in the morning

    • at sport, cultural or academic functions

    • in handing in homework, class work, corrections and self-study tasks

    • to ensure that the learner is collected punctually after school and after sports or academic programmes

    • to ensure that the learner does not miss school unless  GENUINELY  ill

    • to ensure that learners eat a nourishing breakfast before coming to school

    • to ensure that learners attend school in their full and correct school uniform

    •  to ensure that all clothing and items are clearly marked with name and grade

    • to ensure that female learners only wear one set of earrings (studs or sleepers are permitted)

    • to ensure that male learners wear NO earrings to schools, unless for religious reasons, which must be conveyed to the school by means of a letter

    • to ensure that the learner completes the set homework and that the homework book is signed

    • to ensure the learner has a quiet area where homework, project work, preparation for essays/tests may be studied/completed

    • to ensure the school is made aware of any situation or problem which will affect their child or any other learner or members of the Pitlochry family

    • to ensure that any deemed changes are sought in an orderly and approved manner

    • to ensure that the learner conforms to the norms of the Pitlochry family with regard to personal hygiene, cleanliness, neatness and manners

    • to ensure that the learner has received all the necessary immunisation, as required by law, upon entering Pitlochry

    • to ensure that they protect the rights of the learner to receive a good education in a calm, child centred environment which produces independent thinkers who are not afraid of making mistakes

    • to ensure that all medical and dental appointments are made out of school hours

    • to train their children to be responsible for themselves by:

    • ensuring that all bags are packed the night before

    • not bringing in forgotten articles / lunch / P.E. clothes / books, etc

    • to ensure that all school notices are read and the reply slip returned the following morning.  We would really appreciate this, as it would reduce the number of unnecessary telephone calls which we have to field.
